Grace Church was born in the fellowship of a group of Christians who had the vision of a new Methodist Church in Ruston. A series of prayer-filled meetings in the home of the late Fletcher and Esther Baker led to the organization of Grace Methodist Church in 1950.
On October 8, 1950, the first formal service took place in Reese Hall on the campus of Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now Louisiana Tech University) with Reverend Doug McGuire serving as pastor. On November 8, 1950, the church charter was opened, and 116 persons had signed it when it closed on November 19, 1950.
The church continued to meet in Reese Hall from 1950 to 1953. During that time, funds were raised for a building at the corner of Tech Drive and U.S. Highway 80 and a parsonage at 1200 Dubach Avenue in Ruston. An official groundbreaking was held for the Tech Drive education wing and fellowship hall in 1952. A sanctuary was added to the building in 1957, and the education facilities were expanded to add classrooms and offices in the early 1960s. The Dubach Avenue parsonage was built in 1955.
The United Methodist Church was formed in 1968 with the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church in the United States. Both churches had their origins in the Protestant Methodist movement in England, a movement founded by John Wesley. In 1969-1970, Grace became a member of the United Methodist Church.
In the late 1970s, members voted to relocate the church, and a tract of land on U.S. Highway 167 North was purchased. In 1982, an education wing and fellowship hall were built on the new property, and the property at Tech Drive and Highway 80 was sold to Louisiana Tech. A sanctuary and office complex were added to the new building in 1987. A new parsonage located at 3700 Ridgemont Avenue was built in 1992.
In June 2023, Grace members voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church. They voted to become a member of the Global Methodist Church denomination in 2024.
Grace has been blessed to be led and served by 21 pastors through its rich history, from the late Doug McGuire to our current pastor, Rev. Pete Mace.
Since Grace’s beginning 75 years ago, a grateful people have built a legacy of love for God, commitment to Christian service, and the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:21
